  15. MATCH WON: C&A WON5&4

You could feel the nerves on the first tee as the four gladiators got their drives away, although the crowd were disappointed to see Alex only selecting a five iron to start proceedings.

C&A got off to a flyer with a par four only to be pegged back on the 2nd as they both drove into trouble off the tee.

The 3rd saw both teams score bogey but it was enough for a well earned half.

C&A went on a run of three straight pars from the 4th to the 6th and extended their lead to 2up. Colin was heard to say to his partner 'let's turn the screw' on the short walk to the par three 7th only for Alex to knock his seven iron to 5 feet and take the hole. The straight forward 8th was also taken by A&N with Neil using his extra shot to great effect.

AK Patel, who had been slowly finding his swing, got it together going down the par five 9th to ensure that C&A went through the turn at 1up.

The energy sapping 10th was split between the two sides in a poor seven.

The game then took a decisive turn as C&A both got their drives away down the difficult 11th with Colin getting up and down to take the hole in par.

It was at this stage that C&A seemed to get a second wind and were determind not to let the 2up advantage slip again. The dog legged 12th and 13th provided a great spectacle for the crowd with the pin being peperred by all four players. C&A's putting was the telling factor as they took both holes and took the score 4up with five to play.

At the par three 14th both Neil and Alex hit the green but as on earlier greens both failed to get down in two leaving the door wide open for Colin to settle the game with a par three. C&A won 5&4 which would have never have been considered possible at the hal way point.

Both teams seemed to enjoy the next few holes thus completing a very enjoyable round of golf.

The next game is due in Feb07 and Pineridge has been penciled in as the venue.

FROME GOLF COURSE: JONES TWO BALL

Weather: Mostly sunshine with the odd shower. Temp: 15 Celcius
Players: Colin & Simon Jones
Stroke Play.
Handicaps: Col - 14......Si - 24
As usual the first green woke both of us with it's huge down slope from left to right. The front half was steady for both of us but Si didn't do himself any favours with a crazy 9 down the third. My putting which had been on holiday at Pine Ridge last week (85 ...+13) didn't really turn up on the front half with missed chances of birdie on 4 of the first 9 holes. Thankfully Si got his round back on track with a steady few holes from the 4th through to the 9th resulting in a outward 51. My 43 could have been better but I was quite happy with my tee to green play.
Back half started suprisingly well with both of us getting 3's down the 10th. This however was a false dawn with the 12th and 13th biting back as we both came a little unstuck. I managed to get my sole birdie down the infamous 14th before collecting a double bogey down 15.
Si's back half was the more consistent of the twoof us as he managed a 44 to my 43. All in all it was a very relaxing and plesant round of golf with the odd shot of genius amongst a load of very average shots. As usual the car golf was terriffic with a dozen shots taken off both of our scores.

Pics below are of the delightful 18th tee and the 6th green with it's infamous four levels.

SEASON STARTER - 16.04.05

'Season Starter'

Only the Dan and myself could get the round in for the season starter. It was a nervous affair on the 1st tee as we didn't have time for a few balls on the range due to a cock up with the tee booking by the muppets at Downshire.

One bonus was that due to the FA Cup semi-finals the course was fairly quiet and we encountered no hold ups.

Weather - mild - 18 degrees C - no wind

DOWNSHIRE - 01.09.04 - The Spoon Plays

Players:
Alex 'The player' Hammersley
Colin 'The Truth' Jones
Paul 'The Spoon' Melhuish

Weather: sunny, no wind.

Scoring: Medal - gross play - no shots given

Scores:
Alex - 93
Paul - 92
Colin - 86

All players started a little slow. Back half much more fun that the front half.

Alex had a crazy front half with a nasty 9 on the 5th followed by a tasty chip in on the 8th.

Col's putting let him down, spoling what could have been a single figure round.

Paul's first time at the Downshire made for good viewing with some great drives and some fluffy wegdes.
